OUGD601 | 'New Coke' Rebrand Failure

In 1985 Coke were losing to Pepsi in sales and popularity. To get some attention and hopefully boost sales, Coca-Coal released 'New Coke' and stopped production on the original soda.

The publi outcry for the original recipe to be brought back was enough for Coke to revert back to their old product - making 'New Coke' to be seen as a failure. It seems the consumers saw Coke as more than a drink, but it represented American culture.

The demand for the original Coke, plus all the publicity, allowed Coca-Cola to regain the top spot and widened the sales gap between them and Pepsi.
